Music: Love Song - Sara Bareilles
Isn't it amazing how an occurrence of an event changes an entire situation? From the smallest of things such as a wrong word spoken to the largest of conflict like a the war in Iraq. Some things have everlasting and permanent impact like The Killing Fields in Cambodia. The result of one man's greed and cruelty resulted in nationwide deterioration. Pol Pot's selfish ambitions set his own country 30 years back into time.
On a more positive note though, one man's realization and awareness has resulted in a worldwide movement towards a better future. Al Gore's documentary has impacted me in many many ways. Because of it, I'm definitely more aware of the devastating damages we are inflicting upon the planet we call home. I believe we all play a role in efforts to aid the ever alarming effects of global warming. Because of that also, I urge all your readers to participate in Earth Hour 2008. Visit EARTH HOUR for more information!
Since we are on the topic of important events or happenings, today's Speech class was definitely a turning point of my college life thus far. I arrived at campus early to run some errands like check out book prices and stuff like that. Met up with Michelle which was such a big help to me because she showed me around. I realized later that I still had an extra hour to kill so I visited the library just for kicks.
It is really hard walking around alone. I don't know if it's just my paranoia setting in but everywhere I go, I seem to earn weird stares from people. Maybe it was the green shirt I was wearing. Or maybe they can tell I'm a freshie and so giving new kids weird stares are a must. I felt this the most in library whenever I walked past a table or something. Talk about nerve-racking. The next time I feel that, I should probably just go up to them and introduce myself. Effective way of making friends.
Anyway, Speech class began soon after and today there were so many more people in my class. Yay! My lecturer, who also happened to be my advisor, was a primp looking woman who's most likely to be in her mid 4o's. She carried herself well and had a rather good sense of humour. She briefly introduced herself and the course we were about to take this semester. As this a speech class, talking in class would be highly encouraged.
To break the ice amongst one another, she made us line up in two rows, facing each other. The predictable situation happened and now each of us had gotten to know at least one new person in class. The guy I got to know was Yuan Wei, who is 20 this year and from Damansara. We took our seats and she explained to us our homework; to prepare a 2 minute speech on our new found friend and speak of at least 2 interesting things about him/her.
Greaaaat. A speech?! I was never good with speeches. I'd rather hide behind a notebook or bury my head in tons of paper writing than to deliver a speech in front of a crowd. And yes, I consider 3 a crowd. I was nervous, obviously. I can safely say that I'll probably be the girl that stammers and giggles out of embarrassment after every phrase or two. So much for making a lasting and reputable impression. Public speaking has never been my forte, even back in high school.
She left us shortly after and most of us sat there stunned because this was supposed to be a one and a half hour class and she ended it an hour earlier. We ended up discussing with each other about our new assignment. I found out some pretty interesting stuff about Yuan Wei, which I will add in the next post or so when I'm able to include a picture.
Throughout the process of getting to know each other, we got to know the other pair that was seated beside us. Ruby from Klang and Vick from Ampang. Also I found a new Subang friend! Winnie from Seafield. She had the V8 and I was extremely jealous. After class, we decided to all hang at Asia Cafe for a drink and some casual conversations.
So I can conclude, today a very productive day despite only having half an hour of class. :)
